The boundless forgiveness of God is the keynote
of today’s readings.
: Wisdom is one of the
“newest” works in the Old Testament; scripture scholars date it to the
first century before Christ. It is full of wonderful poetry and insight.
The passage we hear today is about the power and mercy of God. The sacred
author tells us that God is not merciful in spite of his power; rather,
God’s mercy flows from that very power. “Your might is the source of
justice;/your mastery over all things makes you lenient to all” (Wisdom
).As God has done, so much we
do; God’s mercy teaches us to be both just and kind.
In Psalm 86 we
respond to the First Reading with a song that praises the God of
forgiveness and asks for his mercy.
:This reading powerfully expresses the action of the
Holy Spirit, the advocate. “We do not know how to pray as we ought, “
): we cannot find the right words; we do not know what to ask for. But we
need not fear, for the Holy Spirit inter-cedes for us, praying beyond the
power of speech with “inexpressible groanings” (Romans
), according to the will of God.
Last Sunday we heard the
parable of the sower, which spoke of how we receive the word of God.
Today, another parable of sowing and growth speaks about the
. The enemy sows weeds among the wheat, but out of concern for the good
grain, the master forbids the servants to pull up these weeds until
harvest time, when all will be sorted out. God’s patience is great.
The longer form of the reading includes two more short parables of
the kingdom, both of which speak of incredible growth: from a tiny mustard
seed comes a huge bush; from a small amount of yeast comes a great batch
of dough. Jesus explains the first parable of the kingdom to his
disciples. Judgment awaits us all.
